Travel to Harrisonburg: Your Transportation Options

I did not grow up in Harrisonburg *gasp*. I grew up in Washington State. My family still lives there. And they are coming to visit this week! It got me thinking about how folks can arrive in Harrisonburg. I did a bit of research, and here are your transportation options.

  • Plane. Flying in? Most of us don’t have the privilege of owning our own aircraft, but if you do, you can land at our local (private) Bridgewater Air Park. However, if you are like the rest of us and fly commercially, plan on landing in either of these airports: (1) Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport in Weyers Cave. It is about a half hour’s drive from Harrisonburg. A small airport with short lines and friendly folks. (2) Charlottesville Albemarle Airport. This airport is also quite small with quick trips through security. Located just 45 minutes from Harrisonburg, with easy access from Route 33. (3) Richmond International Airport. This airport has been working hard to provide quality airlines at great prices, and is about 2 hours from Harrisonburg. Smaller than airports in Washington, DC, with relatively short lines and easy access from I-64. (4) Any of the DC area airports are great as well. The Dulles International Airport is technically located in Virginia, and is about 2 hours from Harrisonburg. The Reagan National Airport is closer to Downtown DC, about a half hour past the Dulles Airport. Both are fabulous, easy to get to, and provide excellent airline choices.
  • Train. Trains are an excellent mode of transportation. You can walk around, eat, and take in the beautiful scenery while winding through the countryside. There are two Amtrak stations near Harrisonburg. One is in Staunton, which is a half hour South of Harrisonburg, and one is in Charlottesville, which is 45 minutes East. Travel by train to the station, and either grab a taxi to Harrisonburg, or hop on a Greyhound Bus.
  • Automobile. Driving is sometimes more economical when traveling long distances, so if you choose to do so, Harrisonburg is easy to find! The ‘Burg is located right on I-81, which is a major interstate that runs from New York to Tennessee. The nearest interstates that connect to I-81 are I-64, which runs East/West and has access to Charlottesville and Richmond, and I-66, which also runs East/West and has access to Washington DC and Baltimore, Maryland.

Whichever way you decide to travel to Harrisonburg, we welcome you! If you are relocating to the area (or thinking about it), let us know. We have a fantastic Relocation Guide that can help you get acquainted with the area. For a quick preview, check out our online guide.
