Circuit City Closing Its Doors

January 17th, 2009 by Chris Rooker · 1 Comment

(This post is a re-entry of a previous post, with some additions. The previous one mysteriously disappeared.)

After 60 years in business, all 567 retail outlets of Circuit City will be shutting down and liquidating inventory. The corporation had tried desperately in recent weeks to find a buyer, and was unsuccessful.

The company actually lost money on its product sales, but made all its profit on financing customers’ purchases — making it an especially weak link in this declining economy.

The local store has already started liquidating inventory — though I must say, the deals at this point are rather modest. I was running an errand this afternoon at Staples, and I saw a guy out on Burgess Avenue holding a sign that said something like, “30% off — Liquidation Sale at Circuit City.”

I decided to stop by, because I have been wanting to buy a new flat-screen monitor for my office. I was disappointed. Most of the prices were 10% off, some were 20% off, and very few 30% off. (The sign must have said, “Up to 30% off.”) Anyway, you might want to call for a price if you are looking for a specific item before braving the cold and the ingress/egress quagmire at Harrisonburg Crossing.
