Spring Home Maintenance Guide: Tasks to Tackle Around Your Home

Spring Home Maintenance Guide | Harrisonblog

Our gorgeous Shenandoah Valley is springing back to life after the doldrums of winter, and that means it is time to get our homes — and yards — back in order. Spring cleaning can be an overwhelming project that honestly seems so daunting that a lot of people just don’t do it at all. We believe completing the tasks below will give you a huge leap in your spring cleaning.

Here’s Your Spring Home Maintenance Guide: What To Do in April, May, and June to Care For Your Home

Every Month

  • Vacuum + dust HVAC
  • Put ice (to sharpen), baking soda and citrus fruit rinds (to freshen) through garbage disposal

April

  • Have the heating system serviced
  • Aerate and fertilize lawn
  • Walk around the house looking for problems with paint, shingles, foundation, etc.
  • Check for leaks on supply lines to sinks and toilets
  • Sharpen lawn mower blades
  • Clean fireplaces and have chimneys swept
  • Turn/rotate mattresses

May

  • Clean, check over, repair, and seal deck
  • Plant annuals and perennials
  • Wash and clean window sills inside and out
  • Check and clean range hood fan
  • Seal tile grout
  • Clean dishwasher drain bin

June

  • Remove old paints and flammables from garage
  • Repair and paint fences
  • Test door tightness on fridge
  • Clear outdoor A/C unit grills and coils of debris

Your Home Will Thank You

We know home maintenance is hardly anyone’s favorite pastime, but performing the tasks above can truly extend the life of your home, adding value long term. Our advice? Take it one task at a time. Plant some flowers, then take a break with a cold beverage. Then, tackle the tile grout, and go for a quick walk. Before you know it, you’ll be finished with your to-do list, and your home with benefit in the long run.

BONUS: checking for leaks every other month could help you save money on your water bill, while checking vents and fans can save thousands on electricity.
